Movie Review: Wicked

Movie Review: Wicked

Having been lucky enough to experience the Wicked Broadway show with my mom after winning the lottery for affordable tickets, I was thrilled to see how the movie adaptation would measure up. I’m happy to say it did not disappoint!

The movie captures much of the magic and heart of the Broadway production while carving out its unique place. Though it strays from Gregory Maguire’s book in some ways, the film beautifully maintains the themes of friendship, ambition, and the blurred lines between good and evil. I urge everyone to experience the movie and dive into the book for a richer understanding of the story.

Ariana Grande brought an electric energy to her character, showcasing her incredible singing and dancing skills while leaning into the overwhelming personality of her role. Meanwhile, Cynthia Erivo shone brilliantly, thriving in every aspect of her performance and bringing depth and nuance to her character.

A standout for me was the costume design. The vibrant, detailed outfits brought the whimsical world of Oz to life, seamlessly blending fantasy with high fashion. Each piece felt purposeful and added to the story's visual richness.

Whether you’re a longtime fan of Wicked or new to the story, this movie is a must-watch. It’s a dazzling adaptation that stays true to its theatrical roots while breathing fresh energy into a beloved tale. Don’t miss it!
